more on lettering styles

by

Hi Stacy-
I found something yesterday that really jumped out at me as a neat tool!! OK–So I attended the class you and Elaine did on lettering– I have always been a person that likes my handwriting-I did Calligraphy as a teenager and just sorta developed my handwriting. BUT I have never liked the way I write a big letter- like if I was doing a title or that sorta thing. (does that make sense?) So I loved seeing your ideas for making letters more interesting, etc.

Yesterday I was in JoAnns and found this calender called Calligraphy Letter Art. Each two or three week period of the year focuses on a style of lettering. Each day you have a word that you practice using the style and the calender even provides lines to use. The directions tell you what each line represents. At first it seems rigid, but after looking at it more I found that some of the lettering styles are VERY cool. I know that there are creative lettering books out there; I have several. This is different because it provides a great tool for learning with the lines, and
even talks about what part of the pen stroke is heavy or light.

I realized that by practicing Calligraphy earlier in life I developed my handwriting (that I like) and this is a great tool for people to develop handwriting that they like by choosing which lettering style works for them or choosing certain letters from different styles to create their own complete alphabet slowly over time.

I hope to learn to make some large letters for titles with more confidence. There are a few of the alphabets that have great detailing.

Ok so enough rambling–I sent all this rambling because I thought it might be a cool thing for your blog if you talk more about handwriting.

So, Darcie, it *IS* a cool thing. Thanks for sharing your find!
